Microsoft launched a family of
Surface tablets on Monday that will be the showcase platform for the
company’s next-generation Windows 8 operating system. The tablet,
Microsoft’s first, is designed to compete with Apple’s iPad and Android.
It will come in two versions, one that is powered by an ARM processor
and runs on Microsoft’s upcoming tablet-based Windows RT
operating system, and a more powerful version that runs on an Intel i5
processor that works with the Windows 8 desktop OS. Both will have a
fold-out cover that becomes a keyboard.
The Microsoft Surface is only 9.3mm thick and weighs less than 1.5 pounds. It also has a USB 2.0 port for connectivity to a computer and utilizes a special screen that responds not only to touch but also can be written on with a special digital stylus.
