The much-anticipated and much-awaited London Olympics 2012 are finally here. Pretty soon, athletes and sportsmen from around the globe will pit against each other, striving for glory and fame. Media broadcasting companies are working relentlessly to cover the event 24/7. Hence, the collaboration between Latin America's largest internet company, Terra, and world's leading telecom vendor Ericsson to stream the even live to Latin American viewers is no surprise. But the two companies has partnered to do something that would be the first for the Olympics. They will broadcast the Olympic games in 3D, a first for the event.
The HD and 3D content, which will be the result of this collaboration, will be widely available in Latin America. Viewers will be able to watch the Olympics 2012 live across their smartphones, TVs and PCs. In fact, the live 3D content will also be available to TV sets connected to the internet.
Terra has been able to accomplish this mighty task, thanks to the help from Ericsson. Ericsson is helping Terra by lending it high-end receivers, through which Terra will be delivering HD video along with 3D content of the entire event. So while millions of people in Latin America may not be able to go watch the games in London, they will be able to get a near-real experience right on their screens.
According to the Technology Manager at Terra, Allan Pessoa, “The Olympic Games are the biggest event in the world. Our target is to deliver one of the world’s most popular sports events reliably, hiding the huge complexity of video contribution, distribution and transmission from viewers so they can sit back and simply enjoy the action on TV, PCs or mobile devices.”
Terra currently boasts a whopping 100 million monthly visitors to its portals and the company has been offering live coverage of past Olympic games. Ericsson, on the other hand, has the leading video content delivery solutions in the video industry. And thus, the collaboration of these two will indeed be a very welcoming move for viewers in Latin America.
The Vice President of Ericsson Latin America, Eduardo Ricotta, is of the view, “By partnering with Ericsson, Terra can ensure they will offer a world-class HD content broadcast not only to TVs and PCs, but also to mobile phones and tablets. Consumers want to watch TV on multiple devices and mobile ‘TV Anywhere’ is gaining momentum as operators expand and leverage their networks.”
